Karugu has worked for Solidaridad for almost 10 years and have been involved in initiating and implementing the first coffee certification programme Utz Kapeh (now called Utz Certified) in East and Central Africa supported by Solidaridad. He set up the Solidaridad Regional Office which was registered in Kenya in 2008 and coordinates the implementation of the ongoing projects in the region. These are related to sustainable production of coffee, gold, cotton, sugarcane, tea, horticulture and food security in Burundi, Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. His office is also looking at the possibility of starting programmes in the new state South Sudan. Prior to working for Solidaridad as an agronomist, Karugu worked for the Ministry of Agriculture in Kenya as a Technical Officer, the Coffee Board of Kenya as an Area Manager and served as Head Field Services Manager in the giant national Coffee company, Kenya Planter’s Cooperative Union Limited on agricultural related sustainable production chains for over 20 years.
