In a new video series Kenyan farmers highlight the challenges they face

Horticulture is a significant element of Kenya’s economy, providing livelihoods for thousands of smallholder farming households. But these farmers face a plethora of challenges from limited resources to outdated techniques that put their financial well being and food security at risk. In a new series of videos, supported by the Horticulture for Growth (H4G) programme, Kenyan farmers themselves speak about the problems they face in trying to raise crops in a sustainable and healthy way that also lets them earn a living.

From issues of pest management and the overuse of pesticides to issues around water conservation to climate change, this series will touch upon the various factors impacting farmers across Kenya and how they can be tackled.

As the H4G programme continues, more interviews with farmers will be released on on our Youtube channel.

The H4G programme is a joint project of Solidaridad and Syngenta. The goal is to improve the livelihoods, resilience, and business opportunities for 30,000 horticulture smallholder farming households in seven counties in Kenya: Kirinyaga, Makueni, Laikipia, Bomet, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nakuru, and Nyandarua. By implementing climate-smart agricultural practices, promoting access to finance, enhancing market linkages, and creating an enabling policy environment, the project aims to transform the horticulture sector in Kenya.

The project had a keen focus on 4 themes including, Food Security, Food Safety, Job Creation and Increased  productivity. To do this, the project will support the adoption of improved climate-smart agriculture practices among the targeted farmers, such as safer crop protection practices, efficient water management and soil conservation techniques. By the end of the project, we hope that farmers will be able to increase their harvest and improve crop quality, while using only the necessary inputs to achieve this, limiting the impact on the environment and supporting prosperity.
