The programme is training 390 farmers on sustainable livestock management practices to ensure that the beef industry becomes more inclusive in how it engages smallholders as key stakeholders within the value chain. The programme also ascertains that as farmers grow their livestock businesses they become more cognizant of the environmental impact; this is key because taking care of natural resources ultimately enhances the community’s opportunity for growth. To regulate landscape practices beyond programme participants a Community Natural Resource Committee (made up of headmen and community leaders) was established to facilitate behavior change and enforce sustainable landscape practices within the community.
Another key intervention was to empower farmers in their understanding of how the market determines price. This was done through a digital tool called the Cattle Grading App which enables farmers to get an automated and objective assessment of the grade of their live cattle before sending them for slaughter.
In the above video, Ms. Leocadia Mwaka shares some of the insights she has gained from the Nambola programme.
