Solidaridad Appoints Shungu Kanyemba as Managing Director for Southern Africa 

Solidaridad Network announces the appointment of Shungu Kanyemba as Managing Director for Southern Africa, effective June 15, 2023. Shungu has been an integral part of Solidaridad since 2017, where he previously served as the leader of the digital team responsible for servicing countries such as Zambia, Mozambique, South Africa, Malawi, and Zimbabwe.

During his tenure as leader of the digital team, Shungu played a pivotal role in building in-house capabilities to develop and implement digital tools, thereby ensuring credibility and traceability for projects across the region.

“Shungu has demonstrated exceptional leadership of the highly effective digital team in Southern Africa since 2017. His contributions to the development and management of digital innovations within Solidaridad have been outstanding,” said Jeroen Douglas, Executive Director of Solidaridad.

With a distinguished track record spanning nearly two decades, Shungu brings a wealth of expertise in business strategy and innovation to the realm of development. His achievements include establishing the enterprise development division at Technoserve South Africa. It is here that he demonstrated exceptional prowess in project design, forging strong relationships with funders, and fostering a cohesive team dynamic that was essential for driving meaningful work forward. Under his astute leadership, the business division experienced a remarkable surge, witnessing exponential growth from $200,000 to an impressive $1,700,000 within a mere three years.

With an MBA from UCT under his belt, Shungu’s academic background contributes to his acumen in new venture development and finance. He is able to deftly pinpoint problems and craft successful interventions. This talent has been instrumental in establishing impactful social enterprises and securing substantial start-up funding. Shungu’s remarkable work as the digital lead led to the establishment of Kvuno, a social enterprise incubated by Solidaridad. Kvuno operates on a decentralized digital service model aimed at reducing the cost of providing last-mile services to smallholder farmers.  

Serving as the head of the digital team, a cross-cutting division, Shungu has demonstrated a profound understanding of the intricate dynamics within the agriculture value chain across various sectors. His expertise makes him an invaluable asset to the global network. Now assuming the esteemed role of Managing Director for Solidaridad Southern Africa, Shungu emerges as an unwavering advocate for farmers. His dedication and skill set position him exceptionally well to lead Solidaridad Southern Africa to even greater heights of achievement and success.
