The 1% for the Planet model works to build, support, and activate an alliance of businesses financially committed to creating a healthy planet. How does it work? Member businesses give 1% of their sales directly to sustainability-oriented, carefully vetted non-profit participants like Solidaridad North America.
1% for the Planet is an alliance of over 1,200 member companies, brands, and products lines across 48 countries that donate a minimum of 1% of their sales to one or more of the over 3,300 member non-profits. While 1% may outwardly sound like a small number, in 2013 contributions totaled over $20 USD million and in their decade of existence 1% for the Planet has overseen $100 USD million.
“Solidaridad works on creating sustainable supply chains from producer to consumer. That approach makes the impact scalable but also long-lasting, as the solutions are embedded in the market,” says Andréanne Grimard, Director of Economic Development at Solidaridad.
“We’ve seen that by working with all actors in a commodity supply chain, we can help companies with their security and quality of supply, while simultaneously helping producers and growers improve sustainability and profitability enriching local communities, whilst improving practices to preserve soils and biodiversity, prevent pollution of water and greenhouse gas emissions. It’s a win-win-win”.
Much like Solidaridad, 1% of the Planet seeks to engage businesses in alliances to collectively tackle big environmental challenges in order to create positive change for today and future generations. Solidaridad is an international civil society organisation with more than 45 years of global experience in facilitating the development of socially responsible, ecologically sound, and profitable supply chains from producers to businesses to consumers. Solidaridad works across 12 supply chains and operates through 10 regional centres on 5 continents.
