Collective action for smallholder marketing
09 September 2016
Agricultural markets in Uganda tend to be inefficient, whereby smallholder farmers are trapped in “good season-poor market” dilemma largely due to poor information flow and low volumes. This discourages technology transfer (post-harvest management) and reduces surplus production. Solidaridad, through funding from the Ford Foundation, and in partnership with SulmaFoods Limited, House of Seed, selected district production departments and National Crop Resources Research Institute (NACCRI) Staff, recognized the challenges the vegetable and fruit farmers face in accessing the market. For that reason, the project worked with a business advisor, Justus Twebaze, towards bridging the gap.
